Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a type of surgery that removes excess skin from the eyelids. With age, the eyelids stretch and the muscles that support them weaken. As a result, excess skin and fat can accumulate above and below your eyelids. This can cause drooping of the eyebrows and droopy upper eyelids. Also due to the loss of fat, collagen and thinning of the skin that comes with aging, “eye bags” are created which give to the face a tired and aged look.

Blepharoplasty is a choice for:

  • Wide or drooping upper eyelids
  • Excess skin of the upper eyelids
  • Excess skin on the lower eyelids
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Vision problems due to drooping of the upper eyelids

Upper and Under Bleplaroplasty

Upper blepharoplasty is performed under local anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes, during which excess skin and fat are removed from the inner part of the eyelid. The incision should be placed exactly in the natural fold of the upper eyelid.

For lower blepharoplasty there are two types of incisions: Inner eyelid incision, usually performed on younger individuals who do not have excess skin but need to remove or redistribute excess fat responsible for “eye bags.” The second incision is made under the eyelashes and on the outer surface of the eye and it is preferred when skin from the lower eyelid needs to be removed as well.

Information

In general, recovery is rapid and complete within a few days of the operation, while the results are permanent. Bruising and swelling generally go down slowly in about 10 to 14 days. Scars from surgical incisions may take months to fade.

Blepharoplasty can be combined with additional combined aesthetic procedures performed on the face such as the “brow lift”, “mid face lift” or “foxy eyes”.
