Hair Transplantation

Hair transplantation is the only medical solution for definitive treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia – the most common type of male pattern baldness.

Modern hair transplant (implantation) techniques have the potential to achieve a natural aesthetic result, as long as they are applied by experienced, specialized hair transplant doctors who possess the necessary skills and abilities.

The Hair Transplantation procedure

Hair transplantation is the process of taking and implanting hair follicles from the area of constant hair growth (donor area) to the area of thinning (recipient area).

The hair follicles of the donor area of constant hair growth maintain and transfer their genetic properties to the area of thinning, so that after transplantation they are not affected by hair loss and continue to grow normally. The new hair grows out according to the natural growth pattern, giving a natural aesthetic effect and a very satisfactory degree of density.

FUE Method

With a special tiny tool, one by one hair (graft) is removed from the back of the head without the need to take a thin skin fiber (grafts). Then very small holes remain which gradually heal within a few days.

We always try not to remove the entire follicle (graft) leaving some of the hair bulb to grow back on the back of the head so we never have thinning at the graft removal sites. The technique of this particular method needs real skill as it has to be done according to the direction of the hair and remove the hair follicle correctly. The FUE method requires more time and more personnel to separate the hair follicles. Many only manage to collect very few grafts at the moment while an experienced doctor collects the same number with the Strip method.

STRIP FUE Method

The STRIP-FUE hair transplant method is a hair transplant technique that combines elements from two different techniques, Strip (FUT – Follicular Unit Transplantation) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction).

In the STRIP-FUE method, a thin incision is first made at the back of the head to remove a strip of skin with hair growth (similar to the Strip or FUT technique). This strip is then divided into smaller sections, known as “grafts”, containing from one to a few hairs.

Then, the grafts are placed in small holes created in the areas of hair growth (usually in the area suffering from hair thinning) with the help of microscopic tools, such as microscopes and small individual injections.

The STRIP-FUE technique combines the advantages of the large amount of hair that can be extracted with the Strip technique (FUT), together with the flexibility and precision of the FUE technique. This method may be suitable for patients seeking large amounts of hair with minimal visible impact to the donor area.

Duration

The duration of a hair transplant is a function of the extent of the session (number of hair follicles) and the hair transplant method applied. The usual duration of the operation (performed under local anesthesia) is a few hours and is painless.

Recovery

In a short time, you will be able to return to your activities and depending on how you feel maybe even the day after the operation. The return to daily activities is always determined in consultation with the doctor and varies from person to person, as it depends on the nature of each person’s activities, the type of hair transplant method that was applied.

Transplanted hair does not require any special care from the rest of the hair, with the exception of the first days after the operation when hair washing should be done with care. The new hair is amenable to any kind of hairdressing process (dyeing, highlights, etc.) and since it comes from the same person, it does not stand out from the rest of the hair.

Result

The result of hair transplantation is unique for each person, because it depends on their special characteristics, their heredity and their needs. But more generally, new hair starts to grow immediately after being implanted and appears on average 2-4 months after the transplantation. They develop gradually and a complete result occurs in 10 – 12 months.

A few words for Androgenetic Alopecia

Hair grows in groups of usually 1-4 hairs called follicles. In the case of androgenetic alopecia, the hair follicles in the front and upper part of the scalp are vulnerable to the presence of androgens and more specifically the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone.

Testosterone, through the effect of the enzyme 5-a reductase (5-a reductase), is converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which in turn is bound by the receptors of hair follicles vulnerable to it and leads to their gradual weakening. As a result, they produce weakened hair that progressively thins and eventually leads to hair loss and permanent hair loss.

However, the hair follicles in the back and sides of the scalp (Pregal and Occipital Area) are genetically resistant to androgens and therefore are not affected by DHT and finally not affected by hair loss. Part of these hair follicles (which constitute the area of permanent hair growth on the head) is utilized during hair transplantation, as it is transferred to cover the needs in the areas of thinning.

Hair transplantation provides a permanent and natural solution to thinning hair and hair loss. This procedure restores the rich and youthful appearance, increasing self-confidence and improving the quality of life. In addition, hair transplantation does not require frequent maintenance and allows patients to choose the desired hair style, while maintaining the natural movement and texture of the hair.
